На 14-15 октомври 2011 г. в Института по етнология и фолклористика с Етнографски музей се проведе международната научна конференция "Migration and Identity: Historical, Cultural and Linguistic Dimensions of Mobility in the Balkans". конференцията маркира резултатите от 2 научно изследователски проекта на секция "Историческа етнология" в рамките на програмата за междуакадемичен обмен на Българската акдемия на науките с партниращи организации - Балканоложки институт при САНУ, Белград, Сърбия и Институт за проучване на Югоизточна Европа, Букурещ, Румъния.

Едноименният сборник със съставител доц. д-р Петко Христов включва статиите, представени на конференцията. Това са 30 текста на изследователи от 10 страни: България (14 статии), Хърватска (5 статии), Сърбия (2 статии), Румъния (2 статии), Австрия (2 статии), Македония (1 статия), Словения (1 статия), Гърция (1 статия), Полша (1 статия) и Украйна (1 статия). Сборникът има интердисциплинарен характер - в него са представени текстове на етнолози, антрополози, историци, фолклористи и лингвисти. Толкова шарени са и поместените иѕследвания - от проучване на различните проявления на социалните и културни аспекти на вътрешните и международните миграции на Балканите, до динамиката на идентичностите и отношенията в различни диаспори. Балканските миграции са проучени в историческа и съвременна перспектива; засегнати са интересни методологически въпроси, свързани с подходите за обяснение на миграционните процеси на Балканите; потърсени са приликите и разликите между миграционните модели в Западните и Източните Балкани. Заедно с това текстовете представя богат и интересен етнографски теренен материал, при това отнасящ се до различни райони на Балканите и до разнообразни етнически, религиозни, културни и лингвистични общности.

Сборникът "Migration and Identity: Historical, Cultural and Linguistic Dimensions of Mobility in the Balkans" представлява съществен академичен принос към изследване на миграциите и идентичностите. Той еще бъде от полза в работата на всички занимаващи се с изследване в това научно поле, изследователи, преподаватели и студенти във висшите училища, но също така би бил интересен за всеки читател, изкушен от балканската проблематика.
